About Flippin Stats

Our journey at Flippin Stats began simply, born from a passion for gymnastics and a desire to help the coaches at our own gym. We wanted to move beyond guesswork and provide real, data-driven insights into athlete development. What started as a fun project has since grown into a mission to serve the entire gymnastics community.

Our first model was straightforward: we used simple score averages and looked at how gymnasts at the same level improved the year before. This gave us a basic, but useful, benchmark for predicting future performance. It was a solid starting point, offering a glimpse into potential growth for both new and repeating athletes. However, we quickly realized its limitations. This method treated every gymnast's journey as identical, a "one-size-fits-all" approach that didn't capture the unique path of each individual.

Recognizing this, we upgraded to a linear regression model, a more powerful statistical tool. This was a significant leap, allowing us to analyze trends and create more personalized performance forecasts for each gymnast. For a time, this served us well, providing more refined predictions than simple averages ever could. Yet, this model had a critical flaw: it didn't understand that gymnastics scores are capped at a 10.0. It could sometimes predict impossible scores, signaling that we still hadn't found the perfect solution for our sport's unique rules.

Our search for greater accuracy led us to our current, state-of-the-art method: beta regression. This was our breakthrough, as this model is specifically designed for data that has a fixed range, just like gymnastics scores. It inherently understands the 0-10 scale, which eliminates unrealistic predictions and dramatically improves statistical soundness. This is the engine that powers the sophisticated and reliable analytics we provide today.

This constant evolution reflects our deep commitment to providing the most accurate and insightful analytics possible. From a simple spreadsheet for our local gym to a robust system ready for the national stage, our core mission has never changed: to empower coaches and athletes with the best data available.
